`Quantum of Solace` wins at British Book Design and Production Awards 2009

The 29 October saw a glittering night of entertainment in celebration of the British Book Design & Production Awards 2009, and 007 popped up to take home a trophy.

Quantum of Solace was successful in landing the Best Jacket/Cover Design category. Quantum of Solace is the title of a short story written by Ian Fleming and originally published in the collection For Your Eyes Only. In December 2008, Ian Fleming Publications and Penguin Books published the complete James Bond short stories under the title Quantum of Solace, and produced a beautiful hard back book.

The book was designed by Angus Hyland and Fabian Herrmann of Pentagram, and is a cloth-covered hardback featuring a silver foil-blocked image of Bond’s weapon of choice, the Walther PPK. The stunning design has caught the eye of many, and Antonio Carusone of design blog www.aisleone.net describes it:

A subtle diamond pattern is debossed on to the boards, which combined with deep burgundy endpapers evokes the discerning elegance of Bond’s world. An embossed manila bellyband with typewritten cover information on the label evokes the official documents of the period.

Held in the prestigious Nine Kings Suite at the London Lancaster Hotel, guests celebrated and honoured the talent and innovation of all those shortlisted and the worthy winners of the 2009 Awards. These Awards promote and acknowledge the ingenuity, creativity and vigour that go into book design and production.

This was a record year with over 450 entrants to the Awards and with over 350 guests attending on the night to witness the presentations. It comprises of 15 categories including Exhibition Catalogues, Digital Printed Books, Children's Trade as well as an Environmental Award for the book that have been produced using best practice in environmental management.

The accolade of the evening for Book of the Year went to The Wizard of Oz, published by Atlantic Books - chosen by for its spellbinding appearance, from concept through to all aspects of the finished product, the book is a true work of art.

BPIF Chief Executive Michael Johnson says, "We saw an exceptional high standard of entrants this year and our judging panel did not have an easy job deciding the winners. Last night was a fantastic celebration of the outstanding creativity and quality found in British book design and production. The BPIF would like to congratulate the winners and all those who have put time and effort into creating such excellent examples of book design and production."
