Amazon deal to acquire MGM may be confirmed this week

25-May-2021 • Bond News

Amazon and MGM’s talks of a $9b take-over deal may be approaching a conclusion.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report this morning that the MGM board had been briefed on the details of the deal on Sunday night and that negotiations could be wrapping up this week.

Bloomberg followed up in the afternoon that Amazon could announce the deal as soon as Tuesday (May 25th, 2021).

Both outlets were quoting “sources close to the negotiations” but added the usual caveats that the deal could fall through at any moment.

If Amazon successfully closes the acquisition of MGM, it will give it 50% of the rights to the James Bond franchise. The other half is controlled by Danjaq (co-owned by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson).

MI6 understands that the deal would not affect the theatrical release strategy of ‘No Time To Die’, which is still on track for opening in the UK on September 30th and the USA on October 8th this year.
