MI6 looks at Carrera's second James Bond racing set - using the infamous Aston Martin DB5 and Ford Mustang Convertible from Goldfinger...

Carrera Goldfinger Racing Set Review
26th August 2005

"No Mr Bond, I want you to die!"
Even before the famous laser scene, Auric Goldfinger tried to get rid of James Bond, with an exciting car chase taking place around Auric Enterprises. But the inspiration for this racing set from Carrera is the road race enjoyed by Bond and Tilly Masterson. Recreating the thrills from this memorable "Goldfinger" sequence as you maneuver the classic Aston Martin DB5 driven by James Bond and the Ford Mustang convertible with markswoman Tilly behind the wheel.

It was this third film of the James Bond movies that helped put the agent with the licence to kill on the road to success. And that is in part thanks to the Aston Martin DB5. Equipped with numerous gadgets, this car slashed the Mustang's tires during Bond's hot chase with Tilly. The 17.71 foot long track, including a crossing, creates a real James Bond atmosphere. The unique combination of 1: 24 track and 1: 32 scale cars allows the optimum slide and drift into the bends. The combination of the track surface and width, together with the optional diagonally positioned magnet unit and the variable magnet system enables the cars to achieve this realistic drifting action.

Track
When fully assembled the track length is 5.4m (17.71 ft) and will need about 209 x 170 cm 6.86 x 5.58 ft of floor or table space. An engaging track to start with, but unlike the earlier Die Another Day track, there are only barriers to theme it which is a little disappointing. With only a few layout variations to experiment with, this kit soon requires you to invest in the extra sections.

The quality and craftsmanship of the track components is extremely high. As with most racing sets, some pieces are a little fiddly to assemble due to tight joints that fit universally.

Cars
Goldfinger saw two famous cars come together on screen, the British Aston Martin DB5 and Fords Mustang Convertible. Each of the cars is finished to a high level of detail. The DB5 however stands out with is exquisite level of detail and metallic finish. The cars race fairly similarly with the Mustang a little better in the corners!

Overall
Another manufacturer has spent time crafted something fun and dynamic, which will appeal to the younger Bond audience. Other than the packaging and a couple of stamps its unclear what the difference would be between a regular Evolution Carrera set and this licensed version. The endurance of the racing however quickly becomes tiresome and will require an alteration in the circuit. A more traditional game for Bond fans to whittle away the hours on.
