Press Release
The Toyota 2000GT convertible that made a debut in "You Only Live Twice" with Sean Connery as James Bond is a new feature in the current summer blockbuster exhibition "Designing 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style".
"The Toyota 2000GT is a one-of-a-kind car that has become a true icon and an integral part of the James Bond history," said Shane Salmon, Exhibition Manager, "Designing 007".
"When the film producer was on the hunt for a modern Japanese car to appear in "You Only Live Twice" - which was predominantly set in Japan - the stylish and brand new Toyota 2000GT was chosen as the perfect car for Bond."
Two of the vehicles used for filming had their ceilings removed to accommodate Sean Connery's height. James Bond never got to drive the car but he was rescued twice in the car driven by his accomplice, Aki, played by Akiko Wakabayashi. The 2000GT was Toyota's first high performance vehicle. It broke several international speed records, and was considered Japan's first supercar. The Toyota 2000GT convertible will be exhibited in the ground foyer of Melbourne Museum.
