Bond Mixology

25th October 2013

MI6 caught up with Martini Bob of Smoky's in Madison, WI, where he shared some of his Bond-inspired cocktails...

Bob Perry is a martini mixologist based in Smoky's Club in Madison, WI, and has been perfecting his skills for over 40 years. Amongst his extensive cocktail list - one that includes such classics as the Journalist and Vesper - are a series of drinks, designed by Bob, and inspired by the James Bond canon. MI6 caught up with 'Martini Bob' to hear the story behind a few of the drinks and learn to make them. All Bob's martinis are served in a 10oz or 5oz frosted martini glass.

On The 'James Bond'
When the UK-based Vodka, Three Olives, was first released, Bob got thinking about how he could incorporate this British take on a classic mixer into his menu. He decided that 007 was the perfect connection.

Method: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and then pour Three Olives Naked Vodka into the shaker and then a splash of Plymouth Gin and then garnish with a hand stuffed blue cheese olive. This became one of our number one sellers.

'Quantum of Solace'
Bob's regulars approached the bartender and mixologist suggesting that, with the release of 007's 22nd adventure, he should add a cocktail themed to the movie. The result was something a little different, not the usual gin or vodka based tipples. It has become a favorite.

Method: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and pour Woodford Reserve Bourbon and Grand Marnier. Shake well and pour into a frosted martini glass.

'Sky Fall'
As with the Quantum, Bob sought to celebrate the 50th anniversary and the release of "Skyfall" with the addition of a drink to his 007 menu. The first spark of an idea was to drizzle Blue Curacao over the top of the drink to give it that 'falling' feeling. And the natural choice of vodka was, of course, Sky Vodka. He experimented on a few regular customers and, finding they liked the drink, added it to the menu.

Method: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add Sky vodka shake well and pour into into a frosted martini glass. Then, in a smaller cocktail shaker filled with ice, and add Blue Curacao and shake well to cool and drizzle over top of sky vodka. Let stand for a couple of minutes to let the Blue Curacao cascade to the bottom of glass.

Bob's latest invention is in honour of the new 007 novel, "Solo". For this mix, the creator decided to revive the old Gin Gibson, which has gone a little out of fashion. It will based in Gordons Gin and served with a drop of dry vermouth and garnished with a sweet onion. Delicious!
