Goldfrapp were dropped from title song plans when James Bond changed

Casino Royale - 14-03-10
The 'Rocket' hitmakers - made up of singer Alison Goldfrapp and producer Will Gregory - said they were hoping to record the theme song for 'Casino Royale', but the British spy movie franchise was being rebranded with Daniel Craig drafted in as a colder, harder lead character than previously portrayed and they makers wanted the theme to reflect this with a male vocalist.

Will explained to MusicRooms they had been in talks with David Arnold, who supervises the film series' soundtracks.

He said: "We were talking - we're friends with David Arnold, so we do talk to him. He's a really nice guy and we like what he does.

"What I understand is that there was talk about us doing 'Casino Royale' and then because they were changing to Daniel Craig, and they wanted to kind of reinforce whatever his character was, as he was the new Bond, they wanted a male artist to do the song- so we didn't. So that is, in a nutshell, what happened."

The song for which eventually soundtracked the film was former Audioslave singer Chris Cornell's 'You Know My Name'.

The group also admitted they hadn't started work on a song for the film and don't tend to keep spare material between writing albums.

Will added: "We write songs that we don't like enough to put on the record, and it tends to be the case that they'll go in a bottom drawer. And the the thing is, occasionally when we start a new album or at some point we'll open the drawer and have a look. And then we always think, 'you know what, we put it in here for a reason: it's not very good'. So there has never been a 'spare' song, really."
