Following Disney's surprising news yesterday that they are abandoning US and UK cinemas in favour of released 'Mulan' on $29.99 PVOD for Disney+ subscribers, MGM has now pivoted their plans for their next movie 'Bill & Ted Face The Music.'
Produced under the MGM-owned studio Orion, the title will now be released on August 28th (instead of September 1st) in select cinemas, drive-ins, and PVOD.
MGM does not have its own widely adopted streaming platform, so instead will partner with the likes of Amazon and Apple to sell the movie as a streaming rental online. This was the mechanism used by Universal when they dropped 'Trolls World Tour' as a PVOD when cinemas were being closed at the start of the global pandemic.
News of Disney's switch to streaming infuriated UK chains, with one cinema owner calling the move a “fuck you to exhibitors.”
MGM & Universal have issued no updates on the plans to release 'No Time To Die' in cinemas globally from November 12th.
