The 007 Stage at Pinewood Studios was rocked today by a series of explosions and an accident that left a member of the Bond 25 crew injured.
The Sun was first to report on the incident: "It’s thought one was 'seriously hurt' after the explosions, which took part of the roof off and a number of wall panels of the multi-million-pound complex. The member of staff was left crushed by part of the set which fell on him as he stood on a ramp outside the studios," the paper reported. "Crew on the film, which has plagued with issues since the beginning of filming, were testing a stunt involving a fireball in a laboratory when the incident took place."
A source told the tabloid: "It was utter chaos. There were three huge explosions and it’s blown part of the Bond stage roof off and some wall panels off the stage. They were supposed to be filming. A fireball was supposed to go through the set. That was the stunt but something has gone horribly wrong. There were three loud explosions, one after another, and a member of the crew was lying on the floor outside the building injured. It went bang, bang, bang. The place is now on total lockdown."
This time, EON Productions were quick to issue an official statement about the accident. "During the filming of a controlled explosion on the set of Bond 25 today at Pinewood Studios, damage was caused to the exterior of the 007 Stage. There were no injuries on set, however one crew member outside the stage has sustained a minor injury."
History Repeating
The 007 Stage at Pinewood has had a checkered history with fire and James Bond productions. In 1984, pre-production was going along nicely on 'A View To A Kill' when suddenly disaster struck. The immense, custom-built 007 sound stage that had been built at Pinewood to house 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was severely damaged in a fire on 27th June 1984 shortly before it was due to house Ridley Scott's 'Legend'. With Bond due to move in towards the end of the year, the race was on to almost entirely rebuild the stage in time. The 007 Stage was destroyed by fire a second time on 30th July 2006 when 'Casino Royale' had completed filming and sets were being dismantled. It was rebuilt and back up and running by April 2007.
